Snapshot: Breakthrough coronavirus drug

Although there is not yet a treatment to prevent Coronavirus there has been a breakthrough with the pre-existing drug Dexamethasone. Dexamethasone is a Steroid which is used to reduce inflammation caused by conditions such as arthritis, asthma and some skin conditions. However the drug only benefits people on ventilators and oxygen, cutting the mortality rate.

The drug could be hugely beneficial to less fortunate countries as it isn’t a costly drug and is estimated to cost around 50p world wide. Whilst reducing mortality it also has shown to decrease the damage done to the body’s immune system whilst it attempts to fight the virus and prevents the body going into overdrive which can also be deadly. For countries with high hospital admissions and high death tolls, this could be a big relief.
